Maintaining a lean body with around 20% body fat for nearly 1.5 years is no small feat, especially without following any specific diet or frequent gym visits. The ability to run 10km effortlessly, and perform 10 pull-ups and 30 push-ups in a single set, all while enjoying a mix of healthy and junk food. The best part? This lifestyle has no drawbacks and took me just a year to achieve. I’ve found a sustainable way to stay fit and healthy.
Why share this journey? To demonstrate the power of the Domino Effect. Let’s delve deeper.
Upon moving from my hometown to Bangalore City, the Silicon Valley of India, my primary goal was to get fit. Despite being a couch potato who spent the day gaming, I took the first step towards fitness. Inspired by the anime One-Punch-Man, I began working out in my room, doing 100 push-ups, 100 squats, and 100 crunches daily.
This was the initial action that set off the Domino Effect. This journey is a testament to the power of taking that first step and how it can lead to a cascade of positive changes. Keep reading to learn more about this fascinating journey.
- The Beginning: I committed to a daily routine of 100 push-ups, 100 squats, and 100 crunches. Despite exercising regularly, I found myself eating more, not less. Over two months, I didn’t lose weight but gained muscle.
- Dietary Changes: I decided to experiment with my diet, consuming only eggs, apples, tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers. While it may seem unconventional, it worked for me. I lost 2kgs in just 20 days.
- The Quest for Knowledge: This unexpected weight loss sparked my curiosity. I wanted to understand the science behind it, which led me to start reading about fitness.
- Understanding Fitness: My readings provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the human body, digestion, the role of macronutrients (carbs, fats, and proteins), and the principles of fat loss/gain, muscle gain, and exercise.
This knowledge was a game-changer. - Joining the Gym: Armed with this newfound knowledge, I felt ready to take the next step. I joined a gym and started working out regularly.
This was a significant milestone in my fitness journey. - Continuous Learning and Progress: As I continued to go to the gym, I delved deeper into the intricacies of muscle building, the importance of cardio, walking, sleep, protein sources, and diet.
By this point, I had become leaner and gained more muscle.
7. Chasing the Six-Pack: I initially aspired to have a six-pack, a common fitness goal often glorified on social media. However, my research revealed that striving for a six-pack can be unhealthy. Instead, I found that maintaining 15–20% body fat and regular exercise was a healthier and more sustainable goal.
8. Switching to Callisthenics: Despite regular gym workouts, my progress was slow. Further reading led me to question the effectiveness of gym workouts and I discovered callisthenics - body-weight exercises. This approach posed less risk and resulted in a more aesthetic and functional body. Plus, without the gym, I no longer needed to consume 150 grams of protein daily.
9. Understanding Nutrition: I delved deeper into understanding what, how, and when to eat. This knowledge gave me a new level of freedom. I could enjoy a variety of foods, including pizzas, burgers, pani-puri, and momos, without any guilt, as long as I was mindful of when I ate them.
10. Boosting Self-Esteem: As I became leaner and fitter, I started to look good in whatever I wore. I even learned about the art of matching clothes to look aesthetic and gentlemanly, which boosted my self-esteem significantly.
11. Mastering the Art of Posing: Now that I looked better in person, I wanted to look good in pictures as well. So, I started learning about posing, taking pictures, and the psychology of aesthetic shots. This is still a work in progress.
